Body Painting

Carolyn Cowan

Carolyn Cowan is a british body painting artist. Her techniques are posted on facebook, showing different products and ways to paint onto the body.

In the images below are my examples of recreating my own version of her techniques.

I used a similar brush to the own Carolyn uses to paint on these sharp blocks of colour

I used the blending methods shown my carolyn on her tutorial. I found the second example blended the colours well.

I felt this blend of colour was not as succesful due to the uneven blend of colour

I used my finger to smooth and blend the colours into eachother. This was a easier way as my fingers could control the blend of colour easier

i used aqua colours to paint these, i felt the blended well, however the did dry quick if the colour was not applied quick enough., making it unable to blend well. I reactived the paint adding a small amount of water to help blend the two colours together.

I felt using greasepaints blended nicer together, however the did smudge. I made sure i used a lot of powder product to set the paint onto the skin.

I used the buffering paint brush method to create a nice blend between colours. Adding a shadow of grey between the white and black. I was happy with this practise as i felt it looked very similar to Carolyns example.

I prefered using greasepaints as i found the coverage and colours were more vibrant and worked will using the blending methods.

I used a mixture of flour and water to create a texture service onto the skin. I applied the product too thick onto the skin, which made it difficult for the layers to dry quick, unable to create a crackled effect.

I used my finger to wipe off the top layer. Once i had done that the product dried quicker feeling skin with a texture, earthy looking effect. The black layer underneath shon through adding texture and dimension and depth to the layers.

Fullers earth is a common product for editorial and fashion shoots used on the body and face.

I wanted to experiment using this product onto the skin creating a eyecatching bodypaint affect.

I used a striking bold yellow underneath as the cracks which would appear contrasted nicely with the black, earthy textured layer.

I was happy with the colour choice of this body painting practise. In areas the fuller earth looked like bark and in other areas the skin looked scally and reptilion like. This technique is a really effective way to add texture throughout the a body painting piece of art.

Ayami Nishimura - Japanese makeup artist. The images stood out to me as colours, techniques and detail used to creat striking bold statement photos, combining fashion with body painting.

'I wanted to represent myself as a Japanese artist. Im really into Tokyo street fashion - there are extraordinary looks. In the 90s, they had ganguro girls. The had dark tanned skin and painted on white on their eyes, nose and lips - adding huge false eyelashes. They also had Lolita Gothic, which is gophic in essence, but with lots of lace and baby-doll clothes. Animation is another example of how they take things and quickly develop them into something more conceptual. I find those cycles really interesting.'
